The Story of Us

Once upon a time there was a farm boy from Minnesota and he fell in love with a mountain girl from California.  After a quick trip to Mexico and a short time courting, they were married and a year an a half later they welcomed their first child, a little girl, into the world.  They moved around the country for several years, Arizona, California, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon and even Hawaii.  Searching for where they belonged.  Both the boy and the girl loved the land (though the girl was a little disconnected from it having spent several years living in the wild and wondrous Orange County prior to marriage).  They longed for a place where they could dig deep into the soil and put down some roots.  Over those years of traveling they had many opportunities to settle in and get grounded in all of those places, but they had to experiment first to find out just where would be the right place.  Kind of like a dog will walk in circles a few times before settling down.

When their second baby was on the way they finally felt a calling to go "home."  And both of them knew what that meant.  On the boys family property, in Minnesota, was a hundred year old abandoned house that his great grandparents had lived in long ago.  It was finally time to go back to that house and make it their own.

Baby number two came (a boy) and then a few years later came baby number three (another boy).  The boy and girl had become a man and woman and their roots where digging deep into their new/old home.  The house was being restored back to it's former glory with some new/old ideas about how to make the house, the family farm and their lives more sustainable.  In their years of travel the couple had discovered permaculture and felt a calling to learn how to sustain one's self completely while also helping others and the planet.

Baby number three is getting old enough to ride in a backpack or sit on a blanket in the garden now.  The other two children are getting old enough for responsibilities and to help create a living paradise on the land.  The Universe is pushing the couple to start the journey in creating permanent agriculture on the land and supporting themselves and their family for years to come.  This blog is about that journey.

My name is Heidi, my husband is Forest and we live with our three children, Aurora, Michael and Gabriel on a 120 acre tree farm.  The trees are sold as nursery stock and Forest's dad runs that operation.
In the last four years here we have slowly been building on our dream of creating permaculture on this land, while still working with the tree business.
